A new Neighborhood Watch Program has been established on Karsh Drive as part of efforts to enhance community safety. The initiative, aimed at reducing burglaries, was officially marked by the installation of a Neighborhood Watch sign, unveiled by Pat Shaw from the Transportation Department and Officer Nick Prego of the Longmont Police Department.

To qualify for the installation of such signs, a significant majority of the block’s residents must engage in the program. Specifically, at least 90% of residents on the block are required to participate in the Neighborhood Watch initiative. Additionally, 75% of residents must take part in a related program known as Operation Identification, which encourages community members to mark their valuables for easier recovery in case of theft.

The Neighborhood Watch Program is part of a broader strategy by the Longmont Police to involve local communities in crime prevention. Officer Prego noted that similar signs have already been installed at three other locations throughout the city, reinforcing the commitment to neighborhood safety.

The collaboration between local residents and law enforcement is seen as crucial for fostering a secure environment. With programs like these, the city aims to empower residents to take an active role in safeguarding their homes and properties.

This initiative was originally reported on January 7, 1980, highlighting the ongoing efforts to adapt community safety measures in response to local needs. For those interested in historic images and updates on similar initiatives, the Times-Call photo archive continues to showcase a variety of community-focused moments.

As this program unfolds, it is expected to strengthen the sense of community among residents while actively working to deter crime. The Longmont Police Department encourages all residents to consider joining the Neighborhood Watch and Operation Identification to contribute to a safer living environment.
