Mystic Aquarium Releases Six Rehabilitated Gray Seals at Beach

Six rehabilitated gray seals returned to the ocean on Wuskenau Town Beach, thanks to the efforts of Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program. Released earlier this year, these seals had been rescued after becoming entangled in fishing gear and marine debris. Following several weeks of rehabilitation in Connecticut, they “galumphed” back into their natural habitat, marking a successful recovery.

As the number of seals increases in New England waters, so too does the incidence of entanglements. This trend is particularly evident around Block Island, where the local marine environment has seen a marked rise in seal populations. The Animal Rescue Program has already rescued and rehabilitated 24 seals in 2025, indicating a swift pace that may soon exceed the 25 seals admitted throughout the entire year of 2024.

The rehabilitation of each seal comes at a significant financial cost, with expenses surpassing $10,000 per animal. These funds cover medical treatment, food, and care throughout the rehabilitation process. Mystic Aquarium’s ongoing commitment to marine rescue highlights both the challenges and successes involved in protecting marine wildlife.
