Minnesota’s Unique ‘Mirror Cabin’ to Open This Fall

A new concept in vacation rental properties is set to debut this fall in Minnesota. Located on 5.3 acres of scenic, wooded land just outside Crosby, the state’s first ÖÖD House—a sleek “mirror cabin”—will offer guests an immersive experience in nature while providing modern comforts. The cabin’s exterior features floor-to-ceiling, one-way mirrored glass, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings.
The design of the ÖÖD House aims to create a feeling of connection with the environment. Co-owner Meghan Zoesch explained, “We wanted to plop this mirror cabin right in the middle of a totally natural landscape, so that it feels like the cabin almost disappears.” The interior boasts a panoramic view, complete with a queen bed, kitchenette, and private bathroom, ensuring a luxurious stay amid the wilderness.
This innovative cabin is the latest addition to the Cuyuna Cabin Collection, a group of stylish short-term rentals spearheaded by Meghan and her husband, Jake Zoesch. The couple’s journey began in 2022, with a vision of transforming old cabins into desirable rental properties. The ÖÖD House marks their fifth property, designed to captivate nature lovers seeking a distinctive getaway.
Design Inspiration and Location
The ÖÖD House brand originated in Estonia and has garnered popularity across Europe and parts of the United States for its minimalistic design and striking aesthetics. The Zoesches first encountered the concept during a trip to Tennessee, where they were inspired by its integration into natural landscapes. Their commitment to the design led them to purchase a pre-assembled unit before securing a location.
Once they found the ideal lakeside property, just two miles from the renowned Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, Jake took the initiative to contact local landowners. The chosen site offers a private beach and tranquil access to the mine-pit lake, making it an attractive destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Guests can enjoy activities such as fishing for crappies and northerns, paddling in a see-through kayak, or simply relaxing lakeside.
To enhance the guest experience, Jake is constructing a fire pit area, a lakeside lounge with Adirondack chairs and a hammock, and installing a hot tub alongside a custom sauna featuring a classic bucket dump. A vibrant mural by Minnesota artist Dani Liana, reading “Love You to the Lake and Back,” will serve as an inviting photo backdrop.
Focus on Guest Experience
The ÖÖD House is a departure from the couple’s other properties, which include modern A-frame cabins and Scandinavian-inspired lodgings closer to town. While these rentals emphasize a cozy and social atmosphere, the mirror cabin is designed for those seeking solitude in nature. Meghan expressed their goal, stating, “We don’t want to just be lodging or a hotel. We want to be a full experience.”
Before diving into the cabin rental business, Meghan worked as a broadcast news reporter, and Jake was employed at his family’s auto body shop in Milwaukee. They credit Jake’s parents for instilling a strong customer service ethic, which they have applied to their rental business. Unlike many rental properties that lack local ownership, the Zoesches are actively involved in managing their properties and addressing guests’ needs, ensuring a personalized experience.
Each cabin in the collection is equipped with high-speed Internet, coffee makers, and fully stocked bathrooms. The Zoesches are committed to maintaining a hands-on approach, whether that involves purchasing new amenities or making repairs.
The Crosby area, historically a mining town, has become a vibrant hub for outdoor activities. With over 70 miles of world-class mountain biking trails, Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area offers scenic rides through pine forests and along mine lakes. Visitors can also partake in paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing in nearby lakes, with ample hiking trails available.
As newcomers to the community, Meghan and Jake have embraced the local culture and outdoor lifestyle. Jake noted, “Everybody wants to be here. Everybody here really likes the access to nature— to the outdoor sports and lakes.”
Reservations for the ÖÖD House are expected to open in mid-September 2023, with updates available on their website and through the Cuyuna Cabin Collection’s Instagram page. This unique cabin promises to offer a one-of-a-kind experience for guests looking to escape into nature while enjoying modern conveniences.
