Meridian High School Theater Students Shine at State Festival

Meridian High School theater students showcased their exceptional acting talent at the Mississippi Theatre Association’s 2026 State Festival, held recently. The students performed the powerful play “A Carefully Calculated Murder,” which dramatizes the tragic events surrounding the murder of three Civil Rights workers in Neshoba County in 1964, one of whom was a local resident.

Written and directed by local playwright Randy Ferino, the performance also featured co-direction by Tyler Hopson, a junior at Meridian High School. The play captivated an audience of hundreds, including peers and judges, highlighting the students’ commitment to honoring the legacy of Civil Rights activism through their art.

Recognition for Talent

The festival not only provided a platform for the students to perform but also recognized individual achievements. Tyler Hopson received the prestigious first-place award for 11th grade acting at the state level, marking a significant accomplishment in his burgeoning acting career.

Following the festival, the students continued to celebrate their artistic expression by performing at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum during the annual MLK Night of Culture. This event allowed them to further engage with the community, reflecting on the historical context of their performance and its relevance today.
