Longview’s Debra Ward Rings in Holiday Spirit for Salvation Army
As the holiday season unfolds, Debra Ward stands outside the Walmart on Estes Parkway in Longview, Texas, ringing her bell for the Salvation Army. This annual tradition, part of the organization’s Red Kettle campaign, seeks to raise vital funds to support those in need during the festive period. Ward, who has been a dedicated bell-ringer since 2018, aims to attract the attention of shoppers and encourage them to contribute to the cause.
The Salvation Army has long been a cornerstone in the fight against poverty, particularly during the winter months when many East Texans face food insecurity and homelessness. The organization’s Red Kettle campaign, a prominent feature at storefronts across the United States, is crucial for funding its various programs, including homeless shelters and disaster response initiatives. This year, the Longview branch aims to raise $200,000 through the campaign, a testament to its ongoing commitment to serve the community.
Ward, who has spent the last two years ringing bells in Longview, finds joy in her role. She appreciates the opportunity to greet passersby and foster a sense of community. “I like bell-ringing because I like to see the people, and I like greeting them,” she shared. Her enthusiasm reflects the spirit of giving that the Salvation Army embodies, as she encourages donations to help those less fortunate.
Her experiences while bell-ringing have been heartwarming. Ward recalls a moment when a young girl generously donated four times during one of her shifts. Such interactions not only boost her spirits but also reinforce her belief in the mission of the Salvation Army. “It’s a Christian organization,” she noted, wearing her blue baseball cap that reads “Love Like Jesus.” “They really put their money where it belongs in the community.”
The Red Kettle campaign is a familiar sight at various locations, including Walmart and Sam’s Club, where bell ringers will be present during normal operating hours until December 24, 2023. The funds raised are vital for ensuring that families in East Texas have access to food, shelter, and holiday gifts, making a tangible difference in their lives.
As Ward continues her work, she remains hopeful for the campaign’s success. “I pray that we reach our goal,” she said, expressing her wishes for a memorable holiday season for all. As donations are dropped into her bucket, her gratitude shines through, as she warmly thanks each donor, wishing them a joyful Thanksgiving and Christmas.
In a world where community support is essential, the actions of individuals like Debra Ward highlight the importance of giving back. The Salvation Army continues to play a pivotal role in providing assistance, ensuring that during this season of joy, those in need are not forgotten.
