Longview Firefighter Explores Biblical Connections in New Book
A newly published book by Longview firefighter Jacob Ledkins seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Bible, addressing fundamental questions about the continuity of God’s message from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Titled Road to Emmaus, the book is intended for readers across the spectrum of faith, from skeptics to lifelong believers.
Ledkins aims to clarify concepts such as Christophanies—instances where Christ is believed to have appeared in the Old Testament—and typologies, which are biblical figures that symbolize the salvation brought by Christ. He meticulously references Biblical scripture, along with definitions from Greek and Hebrew, to help readers grasp the meanings of texts within their historical context.
The title of the book derives from a story in the New Testament book of Luke, where Jesus converses with two of His disciples on the Road to Emmaus following His resurrection. The disciples do not recognize Him until He reveals His identity, sharing insights about His appearances in what would later become the Old Testament. Ledkins hopes to emulate this experience for his readers, encouraging them to see deeper connections within the Bible.
A Longview resident since childhood, Ledkins has been a firefighter since 2010 and credits his faith as a significant part of his life. He recounts a pivotal moment at the age of seven when he experienced a vision from God, leading him to a lifelong commitment to his faith. Over the past few years, he has dedicated himself to studying ancient Near Eastern culture and the original languages of Scripture, striving to understand the text as a first-century Jew or Greco-Roman individual would.
Many Christians struggle with the Old Testament, often viewing it as a narrative of a vengeful God in contrast to the loving nature of Jesus in the New Testament. Ledkins points out that this is a common misconception. He explains that the Old Testament reveals God’s enduring love, mercy, and patience, even amidst depictions of wrath and judgment. “If you read it without having the aid of the Holy Spirit… it’s really easy not to see the goodness of God,” he said.
In his writing process, Ledkins was inspired by the Holy Spirit to delve deeply into the Old Testament. He spent approximately a year writing the book, which was published on Easter Sunday in April 2023. He describes his desire to share the revelations he encountered while studying Scripture, emphasizing that Jesus was not an afterthought but a central figure from the beginning of biblical history.
One of the key chapters in Ledkins’ book examines the concept of the Angel of the Lord, whom he argues is a pre-incarnate representation of Jesus. He posits that this figure was instrumental in pivotal moments of the Old Testament, such as leading the Israelites out of Egypt and interacting with key figures like Jacob. Ledkins supports his claims with extensive scriptural references, illustrating a continuous narrative that prefigures Christ’s arrival.
Furthermore, Ledkins addresses the significance of understanding these connections. “It’s one big, coherent picture,” he remarked, noting that recognizing this unity can enhance one’s love and knowledge of God. He describes the Bible as a grand love story that unfolds over time.
Readers from diverse backgrounds have already engaged with Ledkins’ book. For instance, an Orthodox Jew from Dallas discovered through the text that Jesus claimed to be the Jewish Messiah—a revelation that holds profound implications for those within that faith tradition. Additionally, some atheists have expressed newfound appreciation for the coherence of the biblical narrative, while individuals from denominations that question the divinity of Christ have found insights that challenge their previous beliefs.
“I think they’ll ultimately come to the truth or at least… question their faith and maybe even grow their faith,”
Ledkins remarked about the potential impact of his work.
For those interested in exploring Road to Emmaus, the book is available on Amazon. Paperback editions retail for $17.99, while hardcover copies are priced at $27.99. Given that Ledkins is not yet a widely recognized author, readers are encouraged to search for the title alongside his name to locate the book.
In summary, Jacob Ledkins’ exploration of biblical themes offers a fresh perspective for readers seeking to understand the interconnectedness of Scripture. His work not only invites deeper reflection but also aims to bridge gaps between different faith perspectives, illuminating the enduring message of salvation woven throughout the Bible.
