Longmont Ward 2 Candidate Teresa Simpkins Outlines Vision
Teresa Simpkins, a candidate for Longmont’s Ward 2, aims to enhance the community through her extensive experience in government and commitment to sustainable growth. With over 25 years of public service, Simpkins has held positions at various levels, including as the Town Clerk of Nederland and Assistant Boulder County Attorney. She served the City of Longmont for seven and a half years before leaving in 2021.
In addressing the future role of the Vance Brand Airport, Simpkins emphasizes the need for solutions to balance operational requirements with community concerns. She stated, “I truly believe there is common ground on which to build a better, more sustainable future for our airport.” Her approach involves engaging with airport users and residents to develop a plan that addresses both noise concerns and financial stability.
Strategies for Sustainable Growth in Longmont
Simpkins has observed a surge in growth within Longmont, particularly in Ward 2, where the construction of apartment buildings has been prevalent. She argues for a more coordinated approach to urban development, suggesting that each project must address specific community needs such as affordable housing and accessibility for seniors. Simpkins believes it is essential for the city to evaluate the traffic, noise, and safety impacts of new developments. “We should be willing to tell a developer that their plan isn’t a great fit for us,” she remarked, advocating for neighborhood designs that reflect the community’s values.
Preserving Longmont’s Open Space is another key priority for Simpkins. She is firmly opposed to any termination of the Kanemoto Conservation Easement, arguing that the land was granted with the understanding it would remain protected indefinitely. Simpkins insists that government should act as a steward for public land, purchased with taxpayer funds, and that any changes to Open Space designations should require a public vote.
Simpkins’ campaign focuses on fostering a city that aligns with the aspirations of its residents while ensuring that development meets the community’s long-term needs. Her vision reflects a commitment to collaboration with local stakeholders and a dedication to preserving the character of Longmont for future generations.
