The local chapter of the Imagination Library is making strides in promoting early childhood literacy, thanks to community support and fundraising initiatives. The program, established by Dolly Parton, aims to instill a love of reading in young children by providing free books. Families participating in the program receive books at no cost, irrespective of their income level.

One of the young beneficiaries, Van Fine, has enjoyed receiving books through the Imagination Library since his birth. He has received a total of 60 books, with one of his favorites being “Ten Ways to Hear Snow.” This choice reflects his love for winter activities, resonating with many children served by the program.

The funding structure of the Imagination Library is collaborative. While Dolly Parton covers half of the cost of each book, local chapters, including the Carter County/Elizabethton City Imagination Library Board, are responsible for the remaining expenses. This effective partnership ensures that families can access quality literature without financial barriers.

Community Fundraising Efforts Underway

To sustain its operations, the local chapter has organized various fundraising efforts. In December 2023, the board hosted a decorated Christmas tree fundraiser, which successfully garnered community interest and support. Currently, the board is in the process of planning additional fundraising activities, creating more opportunities for residents to contribute to early literacy initiatives.

Board members emphasize that this time of year is particularly suitable for community engagement. They believe that local contributions can significantly impact the program’s ability to deliver books to children. “Every donation, no matter how small, plays a vital role in fostering a love of reading in our young community members,” said a representative from the board.

Contributions are welcomed and can be mailed to Mitch Broyles, the treasurer of the Imagination Library Board of Carter County, at Elizabethton Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 1930, Elizabethton, TN 37643. The board encourages residents to consider supporting this valuable initiative, which aims to promote literacy and educational development among children in the area.

As community members rally to support the Imagination Library, the ongoing collaboration between local residents and the board underscores a shared commitment to fostering early literacy and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to develop a passion for reading.
