Legendary Runner Dick Beardsley Celebrates 30 Years of Races in Detroit Lakes

The annual Dick Beardsley Races in Detroit Lakes will mark its 30th anniversary on September 6, 2024, with the event’s namesake, Dick Beardsley, returning to celebrate. Beardsley will kick off the festivities with a pre-race pasta dinner at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion on September 5, where he plans to share personal stories and entertain attendees with music.
Beardsley is set to welcome fellow running icon Bill Rodgers, who will make his third appearance at the races, having participated in both 2002 and 2013. “He’s a good friend of mine,” Beardsley remarked, highlighting their long-standing bond. The two legends, who have a history of camaraderie, will also partake in fishing excursions during Rodgers’ visit, continuing a tradition from past events.
Over the years, the Dick Beardsley Races have evolved significantly. Initially conceived as a half marathon to promote tourism following the summer season, the event has expanded to include a variety of races. “We started with about 100 runners,” Beardsley recalled. “Now, we aim to attract 3,000 participants this year.” In 2024, the races featured over 1,053 runners, showcasing the event’s growing popularity.
The program includes the half marathon, a 10K, a 5K, and a youth run, catering to participants of all ages and abilities. Registration for the pasta feed on September 5 costs $20 per person, while race entry fees start at $17 for the youth run and can go up to $100 for the half marathon. Participants can register online at dickbeardsleyraces.com.
In addition to the races, the post-event celebration will feature live music at Detroit Lakes City Park from 10:00 to 18:00. Performers will include American Mojo, a tribute band to Tom Petty, Minnesota alt-country star Clayton Ryan, and the dance-rock band Desperate Electric from Montana. Beardsley promises “top-quality swag,” including impressive shirts and medals for participants.
Beardsley, who has faced personal challenges throughout his life, including the tragic loss of his son, Andy Beardsley, in 2015, has remained a steadfast figure in the community. Andy’s memory is honored in the annual 5K race, which has become a meaningful tradition for Beardsley and participants alike. “This will be the ninth one,” he noted, reflecting on the emotional significance of the event.
As the races approach, anticipation builds not only for the athletic competition but also for the moments of connection and remembrance that define this gathering. The legacy of the Dick Beardsley Races continues to inspire runners and community members, celebrating both the spirit of competition and the bonds formed through shared experiences.
