Las Vegas Entrepreneur Darrick Horton Secures Forbes Recognition
Darrick Horton, the 28-year-old CEO of TensorWave, has gained national recognition by being named to Forbes‘ prestigious 30 Under 30 list in the artificial intelligence sector. This accolade underscores Horton’s efforts to position TensorWave as a contender against industry giants like Nvidia in AI infrastructure. The company, which launched in 2023, has experienced significant growth, raising substantial funding and expanding its presence in Las Vegas.
Record Funding and Expansion Plans
TensorWave recently announced a remarkable $100 million Series A funding round led by Magnetar and AMD Ventures, marking one of the largest early-stage funding efforts in Nevada, according to a company release on BusinessWire. This influx of capital increases TensorWave’s total funding to between $146 million and $160 million. The funds will be allocated toward hiring, expanding GPU clusters, and scaling the company’s operational capabilities.
Horton noted that TensorWave aims to increase its GPU capacity tenfold in the coming year, targeting approximately 100,000 GPUs in deployment and setting a long-term goal of reaching one million GPUs. This ambitious target is described by Horton as unprecedented and reflects the company’s commitment to establishing a strong foothold in the high-performance computing market.
Strategic Location and Local Incentives
The company has recently relocated to larger offices at Town Square, supporting its growth and hiring initiatives. Currently, TensorWave employs around 100 people, with about half based in Las Vegas. Horton cited the city’s talent pool and lower operational costs as significant advantages for the company’s expansion.
In terms of financial support, state economic-development documents indicate that TensorWave has received $210,000 in tax abatements, projecting a $1 million capital equipment investment and an estimated $26 million in new tax revenue over the next decade. These incentives align with Nevada’s broader strategy to attract high-tech employers, fostering local hiring and partnerships with educational institutions.
Horton emphasized that while accolades like the Forbes recognition are appreciated, they do not influence customer decisions. Instead, the company is focused on converting new capital into operational capacity and building enterprise relationships.
The strategy of utilizing AMD Instinct accelerators, as opposed to the more commonly used Nvidia chips, has allowed TensorWave to offer competitive pricing and performance advantages for training large machine learning models. This positioning is crucial as the company seeks to attract enterprise clients and redefine Las Vegas as a notable hub in the AI infrastructure landscape.
As TensorWave moves forward, industry observers will be closely monitoring its progress regarding hiring targets, GPU deployments, and its ability to draw workloads away from Nvidia-dominated suppliers. The company’s success could play a significant role in the evolution of Las Vegas’ technology and data-center sector, extending beyond its traditional focus on gaming and hospitality.
