L.A. Times Wins Top Honors for Innovative Newsletter Portfolio
The Los Angeles Times secured first place in the 2025 Online Journalism Awards (OJA) for its comprehensive portfolio of newsletters. The awards, presented by the Online News Association, honor outstanding achievements in storytelling, technical innovation, and community impact within digital journalism. The announcement was made during a virtual awards ceremony held on August 28, 2025.
Winning in the category for excellence in newsletters (portfolio), the Times showcased a suite of publications, including Essential California, The Wild, L.A. on the Record, Dodgers Dugout, and In Case of Fire. The recognition highlights the newspaper’s commitment to engaging its audience through diverse and informative content.
Karim Doumar, head of newsletters at the Los Angeles Times, expressed his enthusiasm for the accolade, stating, “We are thrilled to see The Times’ newsletters recognized by the Online Journalism Awards. Our newsletter program continues to grow in ambition and success, and this honor is a reflection of that hard work.”
In the submission for the award, Doumar underscored the significance of fostering connections between reporters and their audience. He articulated that the Times’ newsletter portfolio is founded on the belief that “voice and thoughtful relationships between writers and our readers are the future.” This perspective aligns with the evolving landscape of digital journalism, where direct engagement with readers is increasingly vital.
Among the Times’ offerings, The Wild was also recognized as a finalist in the excellence in newsletters (single newsletter) category. Authored by staff writer Jaclyn Cosgrove, this weekly newsletter serves as a guide for Los Angeles’ enthusiastic urban outdoor community. It highlights opportunities for exploration, education, and coexistence with the city’s natural surroundings.
