At the recent meeting of the Jamestown Lions Club on September 24, 2023, members gained insight into domestic violence support programs through a presentation by guest speaker Shauna Isbell-Kemp, the executive director of Safe Shelter in Jamestown. Appointed to her position on June 1, 2022, Isbell-Kemp previously served as the head women’s wrestling coach at the University of Jamestown. Her presentation focused on the critical services that Safe Shelter provides to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Safe Shelter is dedicated to not only assisting victims but also working to prevent future instances of abuse. One of its primary services includes offering emergency and temporary housing for those in need of a secure environment away from their abusers. Isbell-Kemp highlighted that Mary’s Place, a facility established in 2018, is designed specifically to provide this essential housing.

Current statistics from 2023-2024 illustrate the impact of Safe Shelter’s work. The organization has provided 2,028 shelter nights, assisted 162 domestic survivors, and helped 65 sexual assault survivors. In total, it has delivered 3,425 services, including assistance with 31 protection orders and support for 79 group counseling attendees. Those seeking help can reach out to the 24-hour crisis line at (701) 251-2300.

Upcoming Events and Community Engagement

In addition to the informative presentation, Kevin Sortland, who led the meeting, announced several upcoming events and service projects for the Lions Club. Tickets for the annual fundraiser raffle are currently available for sale. The Lions Club will also host a blood drive on November 25-26. Additionally, the state convention is scheduled for October 24-25, and an Agricultural Luncheon will take place on October 21.

Recent community involvement by the Lions Club included sorting used eyeglasses, participating in Meals on Wheels, and cleanup efforts at Frontier Village.

The next Lions Club meeting is set for 6 p.m. on October 8 at Shady’s. Guests are welcome, and anyone interested in membership can contact Glen Nagel at (701) 659-8238.

Through initiatives like these, the Jamestown Lions Club continues to foster community engagement and support vital local services.
