Jack Moynihan Receives Lynnfield’s Prestigious Townsend Award

Jack Moynihan, co-owner of Moynihan Lumber and a long-time resident of Lynnfield, has been honored with the Daniel Townsend Award for Excellence in recognition of his extensive service to the community. The award, presented by the Select Board, acknowledges individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication and commitment to Lynnfield.

During a meeting on October 24, Board Chair Phil Crawford expressed the significance of the award, stating it is conferred annually to a resident who exemplifies “excellence in the area of volunteerism.” Named after Daniel Townsend, a notable figure who died in battle during the American Revolution, the award celebrates the spirit of community service.

Honoring a Community Leader

Moynihan was nominated by former Select Board Chair Chris Barrett, who lauded him for his unwavering commitment to Lynnfield. In his nomination letter, Barrett noted, “Jack’s contributions to our community span over multiple decades. He has not only achieved remarkable success in his professional life, but he has consistently given back to the Town of Lynnfield in countless ways, embodying the very essence of what it means to be a true community leader.”

Reflecting on Moynihan’s contributions, Crawford remarked on the importance of recognizing individuals who have made sustained efforts over decades. He stated, “I think Jack Moynihan really does personify what the award is about.”

Board member Dick Dalton emphasized Moynihan’s exemplary citizenship, noting the couple’s dedication to community service. “It’s been 50 years of being a model citizen,” he said, highlighting the couple’s humility in their contributions.

A Legacy of Service

Moynihan’s involvement in the community began over 40 years ago when he joined the Couple’s Club, where he formed long-lasting friendships with fellow community advocates, including past Townsend Award recipients Al Merritt and David Drislane. His commitment to volunteerism has grown significantly over the years.

Among his many contributions, Moynihan served as Chair of the Comprehensive Housing and Planning Committee, where he developed a “roadmap” for prospective homeowners navigating town boards and committees. He played a critical role in initiatives such as the Partridge Island project, the acquisition of the Lynnfield Center Golf Course, and the development of housing units on Main Street.

Barrett also highlighted Moynihan’s leadership on the finance committee, where his guidance helped ensure Lynnfield maintained fiscal stability during challenging economic times. His efforts have been instrumental in providing essential services to the community.

In addition to these roles, Moynihan was influential in founding Lynnfield’s middle school and expanding other educational institutions. His involvement in advisory roles for the development of MarketStreet further exemplifies his commitment to the community.

As a supporter of student athletes in the North Shore region, Moynihan’s company, Moynihan Lumber, sponsors the North Shore Student-Athlete Award, recognizing outstanding young talents. Monthly winners are selected for the opportunity to compete for the Student-Athlete of the Year award and scholarship.

During his acceptance speech, Moynihan expressed gratitude to the Select Board, Barrett for the nomination, and the many individuals he has collaborated with over the years. He acknowledged his wife Hilda Moynihan, who has been a steadfast partner in their community contributions. He concluded by stating, “In all the roles I have been fortunate to take part in, there is one theme that runs through it all: service above self.”
