Homewood Businesses Illuminate Holiday Spirit with Candlelight Shopping

A collection of downtown Homewood businesses embraced the holiday spirit on December 7, 2023, by dimming their lights and lighting candles to create a warm atmosphere for pre-Christmas shoppers. The initiative aimed to enhance the shopping experience and foster community engagement, drawing in residents and visitors alike.

Diane Matthews, manager of The Village Door—an organization benefiting the Cancer Support Center—expressed enthusiasm for the event. “The local shops along this corridor agree to stay open late and offer something special for the customers,” she said, highlighting the charm of the candlelit ambiance and the complimentary garlands offered to visitors.

This candlelight shopping event is part of a series of annual gatherings organized by the Homewood Business Association. According to Lisa Komorowski, president of the association and owner of Loulou Belle, the event was previously known as Elves Night Out. The rebranding aimed to boost attendance following a decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “This is the second year we’re doing this, and we think it’s cute and cozy,” Komorowski noted as she prepared seasonal treats for shoppers.

Participating businesses included family-owned Van Sipma Jewelers, which celebrated its 125th anniversary this year. Ashley Van Sipma, a representative of the store, remarked on the charm of the evening, saying, “It’s a little interesting to turn the lights down for a jewelry store… We still want everything to sparkle.” The warm glow of the candles created a unique shopping experience that resonated with customers.

Newer businesses like Beyond the Book, a bookstore that opened in October, also took part in the festivities. Owner Tenia Davis shared her excitement, stating, “As a new business, everyone in the business association has just been so welcoming.” Beyond the Book aims to serve as a community hub, and Davis expressed her eagerness to engage with local residents through various creative projects.

The event featured ten participating businesses, each offering unique experiences and promotions. For instance, UpsaDaisy Boutique attracted attention with a 25% discount for attendees. Co-owner Julie Smith emphasized the community aspect, stating, “It’s fun for the shoppers and residents, and it’s good exposure for the stores.” Smith and her partner, Suzy Moore, are already looking forward to a future business association event scheduled for late January, where early shoppers can enjoy significant discounts.

Community members embraced the festive atmosphere, with many expressing appreciation for the local shopping experience. Homewood resident Valerie Burr learned about the event through her mother and shared her enthusiasm: “I love the hometown feel.” Burr and her mother, Lana Graser, planned to explore all participating businesses, reinforcing the sense of community that events like these foster.

Graser, a frequent visitor to Homewood events, remarked on her fondness for the town and its vibrant atmosphere. “We do a lot of special events in Homewood. We’re usually here for just about every one,” she said, highlighting the importance of community engagement in the area.

The candlelight shopping event not only provided a delightful shopping experience but also strengthened community ties and supported local businesses, meeting the needs of residents seeking a festive and inviting atmosphere during the holiday season.
