High School Athletes Shine: Top Performers of the Week
The La Crosse Tribune has identified five exceptional high school boys athletes for the week of September 30, highlighting their impressive performances in various sports. These athletes may not always have the top statistics, but their contributions stand out. Readers are encouraged to participate by voting for the “Supernova,” the performance that resonated most.
Outstanding Players of the Week
John King of West Salem has demonstrated versatility on the soccer field this season, playing multiple positions including left back, defensive midfielder, and goalkeeper. His standout moment came during a match against Aquinas, where he scored his first goal of the season from an impressive 30 yards away. West Salem coach Thomas Fell praised King, stating, “The skills and talent and the hard work over the years playing club soccer … have surely shown on the field.”
Ben Carney, a freshman from Sparta, secured first place at the Westby Invitational with a remarkable finish time of 17 minutes, 0.30 seconds, more than 40 seconds ahead of the runner-up. His performance contributed to Sparta winning the overall event, aided by a strong team showing with multiple runners finishing in the top fifteen.
Impressive Performances in Football and Track
In football, Onalaska wide receiver Brendan Chenault delivered an outstanding performance against Logan, recording five receptions for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, he also made an interception during the game, helping Onalaska secure a 28-12 victory. Coach Tom Yashinsky highlighted Chenault’s athleticism, noting, “He’s the fastest kid on the field just about every time he steps on it.”
Marcus Klar from Aquinas showcased his all-around skills in a decisive 50-22 win over Black River Falls. The senior quarterback not only threw a touchdown pass but also caught an 82-yard touchdown and successfully completed two two-point conversions. Defensively, he contributed with a sack and a tackle for loss, underlining his impact on the game.
Finally, Carson Mayer from Gale-Ettrick-Trempeleau achieved a personal best time of 18:29 at the Westby Invitational, finishing in eighth place. His performance contributed to the Red Hawks securing third place in the team standings.
