Greene County Baker Wins Chocolate Cake Contest at Farm Show
Lainey Duncan, a talented baker from Greene County, secured first place in the Homemade Chocolate Cake Contest at the Pennsylvania Farm Show on January 7, 2026. Her creation, a Chocolate Chip Cherry Cake, impressed the judges during the prestigious annual event, which takes place at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center in Harrisburg. The show, which runs until January 17, showcases a variety of agricultural exhibits and competitions.
Judges evaluated the cakes based on several criteria, including taste, presentation, consistency, and creativity. Duncan’s winning cake stood out among numerous entries, reflecting the high caliber of talent present at the Farm Show. Baking contests have become a beloved tradition at this event, featuring categories such as apple pies and angel food cakes.
To qualify for the statewide competition at the Farm Show, contestants must first compete at local county and community fairs. This pathway enables aspiring bakers to showcase their skills and gain recognition in the culinary arts.
Duncan shared her winning recipe, which has garnered attention for its unique combination of flavors. The process begins by preheating the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Bakers are instructed to grease and flour the bottoms of three 8-10 inch round cake pans. In a large bowl, dry ingredients are combined before adding eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. This mixture is beaten at medium speed for two minutes, followed by the incorporation of boiling water, resulting in a thin batter.
Once prepared, the batter is poured into the pans, with chocolate chips and cherries evenly distributed throughout. The cakes are baked for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. After cooling on wire racks for ten minutes, the cakes are removed from the pans and allowed to cool completely.
This year’s Farm Show serves not only as a competitive platform but also as a celebration of Pennsylvania’s agricultural heritage. With its variety of events, the show attracts visitors from across the region, eager to experience the best of local farming and culinary talent.
As the event continues, participants and attendees alike look forward to the upcoming competitions and exhibits, highlighting the importance of agriculture in the everyday lives of Pennsylvanians.
