A flag football camp exclusively for girls took place on August 12, 2023, at the Pullman Community Center in Chicago. The event, organized by the nonprofit organization Concrete Rose 773, aimed to empower young female athletes through mentorship and skill development. Over 150 girls participated, demonstrating that the sport is not only growing but also fostering community and connection among its players.

According to Darrin Cotton Jr., founder and executive director of Concrete Rose 773, “Flag football is one of the more growing sports.” The camp attracted girls from various skill levels across the Chicagoland area and even Wisconsin. This marked the second edition of the camp, which is offered free of charge to encourage participation.

Participants engaged in a variety of drills, focusing on skills such as catching and tackling. Anya Holt, a participant, emphasized the importance of the sport in developing strength and mental resilience. “I just think females can do anything,” she stated. “It’s a way to be stronger, it helps you stay in shape. It keeps you mentally there.”

Another participant, Molly O’Hara, highlighted the value of the station work, allowing athletes to hone individual skills in both defense and offense. “I am meeting so many new people, and I think that is so important for growing in the game,” she said.

The camp’s curriculum extended beyond athletic skills, aiming to instill life lessons such as teamwork and the ability to accept coaching. Cotton Jr. noted, “We try to teach them about life skills in general whether that’s teamwork, taking coaching, understanding coaching and then the fundamentals that translate outside of the playing area.”

The program also seeks to boost participants’ confidence, particularly as they aspire to play at the collegiate level. Holt shared her recent achievements, stating, “I did just recently get four offers to play at four different colleges, and that’s a big deal for me. I can really play this at the next level.”

As flag football continues to rise in popularity, events like the Concrete Rose 773 camp play a crucial role in not only developing athletic talent but also fostering a supportive community for young girls. The camp exemplifies how sports can serve as a platform for empowerment and personal growth, encouraging participants to dream big and pursue their goals both on and off the field.
