Flight Issues Force 18 Authors to Withdraw from Texas Book Festival
At least 18 authors scheduled to participate in the Texas Book Festival this weekend have withdrawn due to “unforeseen issues, including flight challenges.” This announcement was made by festival organizers on the morning of October 27, 2023. Among those affected are notable figures such as Julia Ioffe, a finalist for the 2025 National Book Award; R.L. Stine, renowned for the Goosebumps series; and best-selling author Peter Swanson.
The Texas Book Festival, now celebrating its 30th year, is set to take place on October 28-29, 2023, in and around the Texas Capitol. The event was expected to host over 300 authors, offering a platform for panel discussions, author talks, and book signings. Organizers have stated they will provide updates on the list of authors who have canceled their appearances, which is currently posted on the festival’s Instagram account.
The disruptions stem from a broader issue affecting U.S. air travel. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered significant reductions in flights at major U.S. airports starting on October 27, citing safety concerns. This decision was prompted by a government shutdown that has left many air traffic controllers unpaid, leading to increased sick leave among staff. While Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is not on the FAA’s list of impacted airports, aviation experts warn that travelers may still experience ripple effects from the situation.
As the festival approaches, attendees and authors alike are facing uncertainties regarding travel. The Texas Book Festival remains a significant cultural event, drawing book lovers and literary figures from across the country. Despite the challenges, organizers are committed to delivering an engaging experience for those who can attend.
In light of the current circumstances, many authors and attendees are hoping for a resolution that will allow for smooth travel and participation in this annual celebration of literature.
