Elder Gary E. Stevenson Dedicates Elko Nevada Temple to Strengthen Faith

Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles dedicated the new Elko Nevada Temple on Sunday, marking the third temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the state. This event underscores the Church’s commitment to enhancing faith and family connections among its members.
During the dedication ceremony, Elder Stevenson highlighted the temple’s significance in fostering familial bonds and spiritual growth. He stated, “Temples are blessing the lives of millions of Heavenly Father’s children on both sides of the veil. Those who make covenants in temples and do temple work will draw closer to their families.” His remarks reflect the central role that temples play in the lives of Latter-day Saints.
Leadership Transition and Temple Significance
The dedication occurred amidst a transitional period in Church leadership following the passing of President Russell M. Nelson. Elder Stevenson mentioned his recent discussions with President Dallin H. Oaks, who currently presides over the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, to ensure the event aligned with Church directives. “These proceedings all take place under his direction,” he remarked, emphasizing the continuity of leadership during this significant moment.
Historically, the last temple dedication during an apostolic interregnum occurred in 1888 with the Manti Utah Temple, making this event particularly noteworthy. Church leaders anticipate that the new Elko temple will serve approximately 12,000 members across six counties in northern Nevada. Previously, congregants faced lengthy journeys to reach temples in Idaho, Utah, or California.
Elder Stevenson reflected on the humble beginnings of the Latter-day Saint community in Elko, stating, “The small group of Latter-day Saints who participated in the organization of the first branch in Elko likely never imagined 100 years later a temple would be announced and dedicated.”
A Source of Hope for the Community
Local leaders express optimism that the Elko Nevada Temple will become a spiritual anchor for the region. Mathew N. Spieth, President of the Elko Nevada East Stake, shared his enthusiasm: “We are especially excited that the rising generation will be able to make the house of the Lord their own personal sanctuary. It already feels like home.”
The temple was announced by President Nelson on April 4, 2021, during the Church’s general conference, with a public open house held from August 30 to September 13. The Elko Nevada Temple joins existing temples in Las Vegas and Reno, with another currently under construction in Lone Mountain.
As The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continues to expand globally, it now operates a total of 382 temples, including those announced or under construction. This growth reflects the Church’s ongoing commitment to serve its members and strengthen community ties through sacred spaces.
