Educator and Advocate Lola Marie Moore Passes Away at 82
Lola Marie Moore, a dedicated educator and advocate for children with learning disabilities, passed away recently at the age of 82. Born on March 29, 1943, to the late Davie Mae and James Welch, she spent her last 40 years in Longview, Texas, where she became a prominent figure in the local education community.
Moore was a proud graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Education. She began her teaching career in Nebraska before returning to Texas, where she continued her education and obtained a Master’s degree in advanced education from SFA. Her commitment to improving educational opportunities for children with special needs marked her as a trailblazer in the field.
Following the passage of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act in 1975, Moore played a critical role in establishing Special Education programs in several school districts, including Hallsville, Waskom, Harleton, and Karnack Independent School Districts. Her work significantly impacted countless children and families, providing essential support and resources.
After retiring in 2003, Moore remained engaged in her community by working with her husband, Dr. Craig L. Moore, in his psychology practice. Together, they tested and supported families, furthering her lifelong mission of helping children in need.
In addition to her professional achievements, Moore embraced life with passion. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, sailing, and sharing meals with family and friends. Her dedication to fitness included belly dancing, which she found both joyful and purposeful. Moore was also an active member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association, where she made many cherished connections.
Lola is survived by her husband of 41 years, Dr. Craig L. Moore, her daughters, Erin Jones and Kelly Garrett, her sister, Doris Welch Sanders, and her beloved grandchildren, Jacob Bartholomew, Charley Garrett, and John Ivey Garrett.
In honor of her legacy, the family requests that memorial donations be made to The Martin House Children’s Advocacy Center. A celebration of life will take place on August 30, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Reserve, located at 7725 N. US Hwy 259, Longview, Texas 75605. A luncheon will be served at 11:30 a.m., allowing friends and family to come together to remember a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to education and community service.
