Community Mourns the Unexpected Passing of Dean Michael Balster

The Brainerd community is mourning the unexpected passing of Dean Michael Balster, who died on September 30, 2025, at the age of 59. Dean, a well-respected carpenter, was known for his dedication to his craft and his love for family and friends.

Born on July 23, 1966, in Slayton, Minnesota, Dean was the son of Harold and Colleen Balster. He built a life filled with love and commitment, marrying Barbara Sunde on June 11, 1994, in Nisswa. Together, they raised a family that includes their son, Alex Balster, and daughters Nicole Goehring and Sophie Tucker.

Dean’s professional life was marked by his role at Hy-Tec Construction in Brainerd, where he was admired by colleagues and clients alike for his craftsmanship and work ethic. His contributions to the community extended beyond work; he was a beloved figure whose impact will be felt for years to come.

Remembering Dean Balster

Dean leaves behind a legacy of love and strength, including his three grandchildren: Molly, Madison, and Chase Goehring. His family remembers him not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his unwavering support and encouragement throughout their lives. He is also survived by his parents and three sisters: Debby Keefer, Dawn Heide, and DeAnne Pierzinski.

A Celebration of Life Open House is scheduled for October 4, 2025, beginning at 1:00 p.m. This gathering will take place at Dean’s home, located at 18938 Maryville Road in Brainerd. Family and friends are invited to share memories, laughter, and honor Dean’s life in a setting he cherished most—his home. Snacks and refreshments will be provided throughout the afternoon, creating a warm atmosphere for all who attend.

Arrangements for the memorial are being handled by Koop Funeral Home in Crosby. The family encourages all who knew Dean to join them in celebrating his life and legacy.
