Community Mourns Passing of Maridell Therese Hill, 85

Maridell Therese Hill, an esteemed member of the Hoquiam community, passed away on January 17, 2026, at the age of 85. Her life, rich with family and community involvement, spanned nearly nine decades, beginning on April 13, 1940, in Fordville, North Dakota.

Born to Gabriel Knutson (GK) Ness and Tina Dale Ness, Maridell was the first daughter in a family with five older brothers and a younger sister. She graduated from high school in 1958, after which she moved to Minneapolis to work at the Creamette factory. Seeking new opportunities, she relocated to Washington in the early 1960s alongside her friend Claudia.

In Aberdeen, Maridell met her future husband, Jerry Hill. Together, they built a family, welcoming two children into their lives. Maridell dedicated herself to various roles within the community, working as a waitress at several establishments, including the Mint, Gambur’s, and the Eagles. Her commitment to service culminated in a 23-year tenure at Duffy’s restaurant, from which she retired in 1989.

Legacy of Community Engagement and Family

Beyond her professional life, Maridell was an active participant in her community. She engaged in quilting projects at her church, enjoyed ceramics, and participated in swimming classes. Family gatherings were a significant highlight for her, where she loved sharing stories from her childhood, creating lasting memories for her loved ones.

Maridell is survived by her daughter, Tina Vessey; son, Gerald Hill Jr. (Lisa); brothers Truman Ness and Ken Ness; sister Marlys Bye; grandchildren Crosby Vessey, Amanda Vessey, Katie Wareham, Austin Hill-Todd, Megan Lockett, Lindsey Hill; and six great-grandchildren. Her family reflects the vibrant connections she fostered throughout her life.

A celebration of Maridell’s life will take place at the American Legion, located at 112 W 1st St, Aberdeen, Washington, on Saturday, January 24, at 14:00. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Maridell Therese Hill’s legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of those she touched, as her contributions to her family and community remain invaluable.
