Community Invited to Join Native Planting Day at Humboldt Coastal Nature Center
On January 24, 2024, from 10:00 to 13:00, the Friends of the Dunes will host a “Native Planting Day” at the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center in Arcata, California. This event invites community members to assist in planting native dune mat species at a site undergoing ecological restoration. Once dominated by invasive plant species, the area is now being rehabilitated to foster the growth of native flora.
To expedite the recovery of this vital ecosystem, the Friends of the Dunes aim to plant a total of 15,815 native dune mat plants. These plants have been cultivated in collaboration with Samara Restoration, a partner organization dedicated to environmental conservation. Volunteers will be provided with gloves, tools, and training to ensure a productive planting experience.
Volunteer Participation and Logistics
Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor work. While participants are welcome to drop in, RSVPs are recommended and can be made by calling 707-444-1397. All volunteers will gather at the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center, located at 220 Stamps Lane, Arcata. To minimize environmental impact, carpooling is highly encouraged.
This restoration initiative is supported by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and several other agencies and organizations. Notable supporters include the Bureau of Land Management, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California State Coastal Conservancy, Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Redwood Community Action Agency, and Samara Restoration.
The Friends of the Dunes are committed to enhancing local biodiversity and improving the resilience of coastal ecosystems. By engaging the community in restoration efforts, they aim to foster a deeper connection between residents and their natural surroundings. The upcoming Native Planting Day represents an opportunity for individuals to contribute to this important cause while enjoying a day outdoors.
For those looking to make a difference in their community and the environment, participating in the Native Planting Day can be a rewarding experience. This event not only supports ecological restoration efforts but also promotes awareness of the critical role that native plants play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
