A significant milestone is being celebrated this month as The Longhouse, a centre operated by North Devon Hospice in Holsworthy, marks its 10th anniversary. Since opening its doors in September 2015, The Longhouse has served as a crucial support hub for individuals facing life-limiting illnesses, including cancer. To commemorate this occasion, the community is invited to an open evening on September 30, where attendees can learn more about the services offered while enjoying complimentary refreshments.

The open evening will take place from 17:00 to 19:00, welcoming all members of the community to drop in at their convenience. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the facility, which is situated next to Holsworthy Medical Centre, and gain insight into the extensive support provided by The Longhouse.

Providing Vital Support to the Community

The Longhouse was established to extend North Devon Hospice’s services to residents living far from the main hospice in Barnstaple. Over the past decade, the centre has facilitated more than 12,000 support sessions, catering not only to patients but also to families coping with the impending loss of loved ones.

Charlie Bond, head of supportive care at North Devon Hospice, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming event, stating, “We are delighted to be inviting the community into The Longhouse, to discover what goes on and how many people are supported here.” He emphasized the importance of local access to support, noting that prior to the establishment of The Longhouse, patients and their families faced lengthy travel times for care.

Mandy Bateman, who coordinates many of the sessions offered at The Longhouse, highlighted the variety of services available. “We’re providing people with support in the form of counselling and relaxing complementary therapies,” she explained. “But there are some you may not expect, like group sessions providing a space to talk with others or be creative.”

A Community-Funded Sanctuary

The creation of The Longhouse was made possible through a successful fundraising campaign, supported wholeheartedly by the local community. Since then, it has transformed into a sanctuary for hundreds during their most challenging times. Despite this, hospice staff have noted that many individuals remain unaware of the full range of services available.

“There’s something very special about this place,” Bateman added, reflecting on the emotional connections formed within the centre. “We share so much through our laughter and tears with a welcome cuppa and cake.”

As The Longhouse celebrates this important anniversary, the open evening on September 30 presents an opportunity for the community to engage with the services that have provided a lifeline to many. Attendees can expect a warm atmosphere and the chance to connect with others who have benefited from the support available. Free parking will be provided at the medical centre, ensuring easy access for all guests.
