Chicago Restaurant Serves Free Meals to SNAP Recipients Facing Cuts
A restaurant in Chicago is providing free meals to individuals affected by recent cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The initiative, launched by Quentin Love and his partner Tiffany Burrell, aims to alleviate food insecurity in the community. Locals began lining up outside the restaurant hours before it opened at noon, demonstrating the high demand for this support.
Inside the kitchen, Love prepared hot meals for the first time under this initiative, which features dishes such as chicken and Jamaican steamed cabbage. “The labor of love right now is to make sure everybody in Chicago gets food,” said Love, who has operated his global soul food fusion restaurant for three years. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, calling on other restaurant owners to collaborate in addressing food insecurity.
“This is a call to action for everybody,” Love stated. “All restaurants gotta be all-hands-on-deck so we can get past this food insecurity piece at this time.” The restaurant has already raised over $4,000 to support this mission, and Love expressed his commitment to providing free meals every Tuesday from noon until 3 p.m. He indicated that if the need continues, they may expand this initiative to their second location in Beverly.
Community members have responded positively to the service. Lind Mitchell, who received a meal for her family, expressed gratitude, stating, “It’s helping me real good, and I appreciate everything that they’re trying to do for us.” Another recipient from the Austin neighborhood, Robert Williams, praised Love for his generosity during this challenging time, saying, “He’s a good man for doing this.”
As many Chicagoans await the resumption of their SNAP benefits, the restaurant’s initiative serves as a vital source of support. “We need to show everyone that they have someone to lean on, and that’s basically what we’re here to do,” Burrell added.
The ongoing cuts to SNAP benefits have left many struggling to provide for their families. With the restaurant’s commitment to serve the community, Love and Burrell hope to inspire others to take similar action. “We’re all in this together. We’re all one big happy family, and we all must get involved 100 percent,” Love concluded.
This effort highlights the importance of community support in times of crisis, illustrating how local businesses can play a critical role in addressing broader social issues. The restaurant plans to continue its free meal service as long as there is a need, reinforcing the message that compassion and support are essential during difficult times.
