Cherished Artist Cheryl Jean Husby Passes Away at 76
Cheryl Jean Husby, a beloved artist and community figure, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, at St. Luke’s Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was 76 years old. Cheryl’s life was marked by creativity, passion, and a commitment to her family and community.
Born on December 30, 1948, in Minneapolis to parents Dorothy and George Chergosky, Cheryl was raised in a nurturing environment that fostered her artistic talents. She graduated from U-High in 1966 and later pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1983, a Master of Arts in 1984, and a Master of Fine Arts in 1986 from respected institutions including the University of Wisconsin Superior and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Cheryl’s artistic journey was deeply intertwined with her personal life. She married her husband, Bob Husby, during a summer break between semesters. The couple lived above a bakery, where they created art while minimizing heating costs during the cold months. Together, they founded Husby Pottery, which allowed them to travel across the United States, including annual stays in the Florida Keys.
Passions and Community Involvement
Cheryl’s interests extended beyond pottery. She nurtured a love for the outdoors by harvesting wild rice and raising and training sled dogs. Her culinary skills were notable, especially her ability to bake bread over a wood stove and her reputation for making the best apple pie. She cherished gardening, skiing, and tennis, finding joy in both nature and physical activity.
Her vibrant social life was characterized by hosting gatherings that included everything from New Year’s Day celebrations to monthly themed parties. She was known for her enthusiasm in cheering on her children and grandchildren and celebrating holidays with great fervor. Cheryl’s commitment to her community was evident through her involvement with the Duluth Art Institute and the Duluth Preservation Alliance, where she served on various boards to promote local arts and heritage.
Cheryl received numerous accolades for her artistry, including a first-place award in clay at the Coconut Grove Art Festival. Her legacy as an artist and community member will be remembered by many.
Family and Memorial Arrangements
Cheryl was predeceased by her parents and her brother-in-law, Bruce Swango. She is survived by her husband, Bob Husby; their son, Seth Draper (Tracy); their daughter, Elissa Husby; grandsons, Zane and Noah Draper; sisters, Barbara Swango and JoAnn Mancuso (Mike); and brother, George Chergosky (Mary), along with many loving cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the medical teams at St. Luke’s Hospital, Mayo Clinic, and Benedictine, as well as the dedicated staff at Ecumen Lakeshore for their compassionate care.
Visitation will take place at 10:00 AM on November 5, 2025, at First Lutheran Church, located at 1100 E. Superior Street, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM and a reception. Flowers are welcome, and those who wish to honor Cheryl’s memory may donate to the Depot Foundation and Duluth Preservation Alliance.
