Charlotte Honors Urban Design Excellence at 2025 Urbie Awards
The City of Charlotte celebrated its commitment to innovative urban design at the 2025 Urban Design Awards, commonly referred to as the Urbies. The ceremony, held on March 7, 2025, at the Charlotte Urban Design Center, recognized outstanding contributions from designers, architects, and community advocates who have significantly influenced the city’s landscape.
This year’s Urbies featured a diverse array of categories, highlighting the importance of design in both urban centers and suburban areas. Notable winners included The Pass, which received the award for Great Development Near Transit, and Montford Park, honored for Great Suburban Design. Community leaders such as Dave Walters and Rickey Hall were also acknowledged as Great Urban Design Champion and Great Neighborhood Champion, respectively.
Celebrating Community and Innovation
The event underscored the role of community engagement in urban planning. Camp North End stood out by securing the People’s Choice Award for Great Urban Design, showcasing how public input shapes successful projects. The selection process involved a jury of ten urban design professionals who evaluated public nominations, emphasizing the balance between peer recognition and community needs.
Among the honored projects were Belmont for Great Walkable Neighborhood, the Rail Trail for Great Public Space, and The Collective for Great Urban Architecture. These awards not only commend the efforts of individuals and organizations but also aim to inspire future developments that prioritize livability and accessibility.
Monica Holmes, the Interim Director of the Charlotte Planning, Design & Development Department, shared insights on the importance of urban design in fostering community well-being. She stated, “As Charlotte continues to grow, thoughtful urban design plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for all residents.” Holmes emphasized that the Urbies celebrate the people and partnerships that contribute to vibrant, people-focused spaces.
A Call to Experience Urban Design
Holmes encouraged residents to explore the award-winning projects, suggesting that firsthand experiences could spark inspiration for future design initiatives within their neighborhoods. This approach reflects Charlotte’s ongoing evolution as a city that values innovative design and community involvement.
