Army Football Player and Father Rescue Man from Burning Car
An Army football player and his father showcased remarkable bravery when they rescued a man from a burning vehicle following a car crash near the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on September 3, 2023. The incident unfolded shortly after midnight in Fort Montgomery, New York, when the duo came upon a white sedan that had collided with a utility pole on Route 9W, just 3.8 miles from the academy.
Video footage captured by Larry Pickett Jr.’s sister, Lauren, highlights the dramatic scene as the two men pulled the driver from the wreckage moments before the car was engulfed in flames. Amid the chaos, a woman can be heard urging them on: “Larry! Come on! Come on! Get him out!”
Bravery Under Pressure
The Picketts were returning to West Point after a family dinner in Times Square when they encountered the crash. They remained with the injured driver until emergency services arrived. In a heartfelt Facebook post, Larry Pickett Sr. described watching his son spring into action, emphasizing his military training. “With immense courage, he pulled a man to safety, saving him from a fiery fate,” he wrote.
Pickett Sr. shared that his son’s military background influenced his quick response, stating, “He mentioned his military training kicked in and jumped right into action.” The extraordinary efforts of both men did not go unnoticed. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll praised Pickett Jr. for embodying the values of duty, honor, and country, highlighting his ability to act decisively under pressure.
Driscoll remarked, “We are proud — and deeply grateful — for his heroism.” The U.S. Military Academy echoed this sentiment, affirming its pride in the actions of both Picketts. Athletic Director Tom Theodorakis commended them for demonstrating leadership and selfless service in a critical moment, stating, “Cadet Larry Pickett Jr. and his father exemplify the values we hold dear.”
A Promising Season Ahead
Pickett Jr. had just participated in Army’s season opener against Tarleton State, contributing to a tackle during the game, which resulted in a hard-fought 30-27 overtime loss. His next matchup is scheduled for September 6, 2023, against Kansas State, where he will continue to showcase his skills on the field.
In addition to his athletic achievements, Pickett Jr.’s off-field heroics reflect the character instilled in him by the academy. His father expressed gratitude that the man they rescued would live to see another day, saying, “Thank you Jesus that this man will live to see another day! I am so grateful for my son LJ for saving his life!”
The family’s account of this dramatic rescue serves as a testament to the values promoted at West Point, illustrating a readiness to act not only for one’s country but for anyone in need. As the season progresses, both Larry Pickett Jr. and his father will surely carry this spirit of bravery with them, on and off the field.
