Amanda Dzimianski Appointed Athens Poet Laureate for 2026-2028
Athens-Clarke County has officially named Amanda Dzimianski as the new Poet Laureate for the term spanning 2026 to 2028. Known for her engaging poetry and community involvement, Dzimianski is a well-respected figure in the local literary scene. She has made significant contributions as a strengths-based and self-publishing coach, freelance editor, and a regular participant in events like Word of Mouth and Beats, Rhymes and Life.
The announcement came last week, with the current Poet Laureate, Mikhayla Smith, praising Dzimianski’s dedication. “Amanda has been doing Poet Laureate work without the need for a title,” Smith stated to the Athens Banner-Herald. “She loves this community and embodies what it means to be a community leader.”
Dzimianski’s inaugural performance as Poet Laureate is scheduled for March 7 at the Flight of the Fireflies Lantern Parade in Dudley Park. In a recent interview, she reflected on her deepening connection to Athens, noting that her appreciation for the community blossomed post-quarantine. “It was like finding a new home,” she said, expressing gratitude for the welcoming environment fostered by local events.
Upon learning of her appointment, Dzimianski admitted to feeling “a bit terrified.” She missed the initial call informing her of the decision while preparing for a state exam. “My brain was so stressed out… I felt overwhelmed,” she shared. Acknowledging the visibility that comes with the role, she emphasized the responsibility it entails. “We live in vicious times, particularly for immigrants and queer folks… the intense suffering is worthy of grief,” she added.
Dzimianski’s vision for her term builds on the foundations laid by her predecessors, Jeff Fallis and Smith. Her primary goal is to foster connection within the community through poetry and art. She plans to host a community open mic at the ACC Library on April 19 to celebrate National Poetry Month. This event aims to create a space for individuals to share their voices and experiences.
Looking ahead, Dzimianski intends to collaborate with local schools to provide students with opportunities to engage with poetry. She also hopes to integrate poetry into initiatives like the Little Free Pantries and the Lemonaid distribution program, believing that everyone deserves access to nourishment for both body and soul.
Dzimianski has numerous ideas in the pipeline, including a community poetry project that invites contributions from all residents. “We’re going to have a big, gorgeous poem,” she stated enthusiastically, eager to see how her plans evolve in response to community inspiration.
As she embarks on this important role, Amanda Dzimianski is poised to make a significant impact on the Athens community, using poetry as a means of connection and healing. Her commitment to fostering creativity and collaboration promises to enrich the cultural landscape of the area during her tenure as Poet Laureate.
