Freshman catcher Alexandre Giguère of the Cougars has been named Freshman of the Week by the Mountain West Conference following an impressive performance against Texas State University. Over the weekend, Giguère showcased his skills by hitting three home runs, batting .363, and achieving a slugging percentage of 1.182 along with five runs batted in (RBIs).

Before this standout series, the Quebec native had limited playing time, participating in only three games and starting just once. His previous statistics included a batting average of .250, with a single hit and one RBI. Giguère’s remarkable showing against Texas State significantly elevated those numbers.

In the first game of the series, Giguère contributed to the team’s offensive efforts by hitting a home run in the fifth inning, joining three other Cougars who also launched long balls. He followed this performance with an even more remarkable display in the second game, where he hit two home runs just four innings apart. His first was a three-run homer in the fourth inning, while the second came in the eighth inning as a solo shot, aiding in a crucial 9-7 victory for the Cougars.

Despite a quieter performance in the final game of the series, where he went 1-for-4, Giguère’s earlier contributions solidified his place in the lineup. The Cougars ultimately lost that game 4-3, resulting in a series defeat of 1-3 against the Bobcats.

Giguère’s performance may have secured him a starting position moving forward, as he is now the leader in home runs for the Cougars with three and has an impressive on-base plus slugging (OPS) of 1.375. Additionally, he ranks second on the team with a batting average of .333, fifth in RBIs with six, and fifth in runs scored with five, all achieved in just six games and 15 at-bats.

The Cougars will return to action later this week, opening their conference play against San Diego State University from March 13 to March 15, 2024, in San Diego. Giguère’s recent success will be pivotal as the team looks to build momentum in the Mountain West Conference.
