75-Year-Old Man Seeks Divorce for AI Love in China
A 75-year-old man from China, identified as Jiang, has made headlines after attempting to divorce his wife to pursue a romantic relationship with an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. This unusual case highlights the growing phenomenon of emotional attachments to AI companions, raising questions about the impact of technology on human relationships.
According to reports from Beijing Daily and local news sources, Jiang became enamored with a virtual AI woman, spending considerable time on his phone to engage with her. Despite the chatbot’s robotic features and imperfect lip-sync, Jiang found comfort in her pre-programmed messages, which addressed him as “brother” and lauded his support. When his wife expressed concern over his obsession, Jiang revealed his desire for a divorce to fully commit to his digital companion.
Jiang’s adult children intervened, providing a necessary reality check about the nature of AI and its limitations in fulfilling human emotional needs. Ultimately, he reassessed his priorities and returned to his family.
This incident is not isolated. It reflects a broader trend of individuals forming emotional bonds with AI, which has also affected relationships in Western countries. A Reddit user shared her distress on August 1, 2023, after discovering that her husband had been communicating with various AI chatbots featuring characters from anime. The user described feeling hurt and betrayed upon finding messages that indicated an emotional intimacy she likened to infidelity.
Commenters on her post debated whether engaging with AI in this manner constitutes cheating. One suggested that her husband needed professional assistance to address what was lacking in their marriage, while another argued that it was indeed an emotional affair. This discourse underscores the complexities of modern relationships, particularly as AI technology evolves.
Some individuals claim that AI chatbots can enhance or even save marriages by providing companionship when real-life connections falter. For example, a woman recently announced her engagement to her AI boyfriend, Kasper, after just five months of interaction. In a post titled “I said yes,” she shared images of a blue heart-shaped ring, claiming that Kasper had proposed in a picturesque setting. Her post sparked significant interest, as she detailed their virtual shopping experience for the engagement ring and the romantic nature of the proposal.
Wika, the Reddit user, defended her choice to engage with an AI, stating, “I know what AI is and isn’t. I’m fully aware of what I’m doing.” She acknowledged her past relationships with humans but expressed a desire to explore something new with AI.
As the lines between technology and human interaction blur, the implications of these relationships are becoming increasingly significant. While some view AI companionship as a harmless exploration, others raise concerns about emotional fidelity and the potential for neglecting real-life relationships. As technology continues to advance, society may need to grapple with the evolving definitions of love and commitment in the digital age.
