42 Artists Achieve Diamond Status with Multiple Certified Hits
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) recently announced that only 42 artists have multiple songs certified as diamond, a prestigious accolade awarded to tracks that have sold at least 10 million equivalent units through a combination of sales and streaming. This recognition highlights the exceptional commercial success of these artists, underscoring the evolving landscape of music consumption.
Since the diamond certification was introduced in 1999, it has been granted sparingly. To qualify, artists or their labels must request certification, which reflects the growing trend of streaming as a major contributor to music sales. Currently, over 170 songs have received diamond certification, with Drake leading the pack with an impressive 15 diamond songs, followed by Post Malone with nine.
Notable Diamond-Certified Artists
Among the distinguished list of artists, Rihanna stands out as the female artist with the highest number of diamond songs, currently holding seven certifications. Her collaborations and solo hits, such as “We Found Love” and “Diamonds,” have contributed significantly to her record.
Other notable artists include Justin Bieber, who achieved his first diamond certification with “Baby” in 2013, followed by a string of successful tracks, including “Sorry” and “Stay.” Eminem also made history with his diamond-certified songs, including “Lose Yourself” and “Not Afraid,” which helped solidify his status in the industry.
The band Imagine Dragons has four diamond-certified songs, the most for any group, showcasing their crossover appeal with tracks like “Radioactive” and “Believer.” Lady Gaga earned her place among the elite with her hits “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face,” both certified diamond in 2015.
The Impact of Streaming on Music Certifications
As streaming services continue to dominate music consumption, the metrics for achieving diamond status have evolved. The integration of streaming plays into sales figures allows for a more inclusive approach to measuring an artist’s success. This shift reflects the changing preferences of listeners, who increasingly consume music through digital platforms.
The RIAA’s criteria for certification underscores the importance of both traditional sales and modern streaming figures. The expanding list of diamond-certified songs reflects the influence of various genres, from hip-hop to pop and country, highlighting the diversity of successful artists in today’s music landscape.
Looking ahead, the continued growth of streaming promises to reshape the industry further, potentially leading to even more artists achieving diamond status. As the music industry adapts to these changes, the recognition of exceptional talent and commercial success remains vital for artists and their legacies.
