Three Running Shoes That Elevated My Marathon Training in 2023

As an avid runner and shoe tester, I have had the opportunity to train for various races this year. While it may seem like I would have a well-established shoe rotation, the constant influx of new models makes this more challenging. However, I can confidently identify three running shoes that have significantly impacted my marathon preparation in 2023.

These shoes have been my go-to choices throughout the year, and although a couple were released in 2022, their performance has remained impressive. Focusing on practicality, not every runner needs to chase the latest releases. A well-rounded shoe rotation can enhance your training, especially as your mileage increases.

The Right Daily Trainer: Saucony Hurricane 25

This year, I transitioned from the previous model, the Saucony Hurricane 24, to the Hurricane 25, which launched in July 2023. My initial apprehension about changes to a beloved shoe quickly dissipated as I began training with it.

At first sight, the Hurricane 25 appears somewhat bulky, a characteristic of its max-cushioned design intended to support runners who overpronate. Even as a neutral runner, I found it to be an excellent daily trainer. The shoe features a combination of PWRRUN and PWRRUN PB foams in the midsole, providing a soft yet springy feel. This makes it suitable for both easy recovery miles and faster-paced sessions.

The Saucony Hurricane 25 is available in both regular and wide fits for men and women, with a range of sizes and color options. It became my reliable companion while preparing for a summer 10K and a half marathon in the fall, ensuring comfort and protection during my runs.

Trail Running with Hoka Speedgoat 6

After relocating from London back to Scotland, where trails are often steep and challenging, I discovered a passion for trail running. The Hoka Speedgoat 6 quickly became my preferred trail shoe.

As competitive running continues to evolve, the Nike Alphafly 3 has garnered attention for its carbon-plated technology. Initially hesitant about the potential downsides of carbon shoes, I decided to incorporate the Alphafly 3 into my training and racing regimen this year.

Although I experienced an adjustment period due to its firmer cushioning, the benefits soon became apparent. After completing a half marathon in the Alphafly 3, I achieved a personal best, shaving 15 minutes off my previous time.

The shoe’s design emphasizes speed and energy return, featuring a full-length carbon fiber plate that enhances propulsion. The lightweight ZoomX foam and dual Air Zoom Pods under the forefoot provide additional comfort and responsiveness during long distances. Despite its high price tag, the performance and energy efficiency of the Nike Alphafly 3 make it a worthwhile investment for serious runners.

As marathon training continues, these three shoes—the Saucony Hurricane 25, Hoka Speedgoat 6, and Nike Alphafly 3—have provided the support and performance needed to meet my running goals. Each shoe plays a unique role, from daily training to tackling challenging trails and maximizing race day efficiency.
