Parents Weigh Independence as Kids Return to School
As the new school year begins, many parents face a significant decision: Is their child ready to be home alone? With after-school programs often costly and hard to access, this milestone is becoming more common for families. In some regions, such as Maryland, laws specify minimum ages for leaving children unattended, making it crucial for parents to evaluate their child’s readiness.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children typically are not prepared to manage emergencies until around the ages of 11 or 12. This organization suggests that structured supervision is essential until that point. Yet, age alone is not the sole factor to consider. Brian Tessmer, director of treatment and operations at Family Resources in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, emphasizes that children mature at different rates. Parents should assess various elements beyond age.
Experts recommend that children should know their full name, home address, and a parent’s contact details, along with how to reach them. Additional skills necessary for staying home alone include following rules, managing routines, and keeping themselves occupied. Parents should also evaluate whether their child can perform basic tasks like dialing a phone, preparing simple snacks, and knowing where to find first-aid supplies.
In emergency situations, it is vital for children to understand how to respond appropriately. They should know what actions to take during a tornado warning, how to react to a fire, or what to do if a carbon monoxide detector sounds. Furthermore, understanding when and how to call emergency services is crucial. While possessing this knowledge is important, experts caution that a child’s willingness to be home alone is equally significant.
In a world where anxiety levels among children are reportedly high, emotional readiness plays a critical role. Jaesha Quarrels, director of child care services at Oklahoma Human Services, notes that parents sometimes overlook their child’s feelings in the rush of daily life. Communication is essential, as Tessmer explains, “It’s a great opportunity to explain to the child that this is a milestone that we’re coming up to as a family.”
Establishing clear rules is vital, and children should have a solid understanding of what they can and cannot do while home alone. Parents should emphasize that stoves, ovens, and matches should remain off-limits, and children should never open the door to strangers or disclose their home-alone status on social media or gaming platforms.
To help children acclimate, Quarrels suggests role-playing different scenarios, such as answering the door or calling for help. Starting small, such as leaving a child alone while the parent is in the backyard, can provide a gradual introduction to this new independence. The advent of smartphones and home security systems that allow for real-time monitoring can also enhance safety and reassurance for both children and parents.
Regular check-ins are advised, particularly if a parent will be away for more than 15 to 30 minutes. This ongoing communication helps foster trust and confidence, ensuring that both parents and children feel secure in this process of growing independence.
As parents navigate these decisions, understanding their child’s unique capabilities and emotional readiness is essential in fostering a safe and supportive environment for them to thrive.
