The Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital in New York has announced the opening of The Samuel Fineman Cardiac Catheterization Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Lab, aimed at enhancing patient care and outcomes in complex heart procedures. The lab, which officially launched on September 15, 2025, will utilize the hospital’s expertise in interventional cardiology to improve treatment decisions and patient engagement.

Dr. Annapoorna Kini has been appointed as the Director of the new lab. She leads a highly regarded team known for its exceptional safety records and superior patient outcomes in the hospital’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab. Dr. Kini highlighted the potential of AI in transforming traditional medical practices, stating, “While AI is not a magic solution to every problem, there are many areas where it can significantly enhance conventional techniques.”

Integrating AI for Better Patient Outcomes

The Samuel Fineman Cardiac Catheterization Artificial Intelligence Research Lab intends to focus on various aspects of interventional cardiology, including procedural innovations and educational initiatives. According to Dr. Kini, the lab will explore existing data to uncover insights that could greatly influence healthcare delivery, from risk stratification to optimizing outcomes in complex cases.

“In five or so years, we think that many workflows can be augmented by AI to better focus our resources where they are most needed,” says Dr. Kini.

The lab will also host its inaugural AI Symposium on the same day of its launch, featuring discussions on the integration of AI technologies in clinical practice. Dr. Kini emphasized the hospital’s commitment to being a leader in adopting AI, which has already been implemented in patient engagement and care coordination processes.

Honoring Samuel Fineman’s Legacy

The lab is named in honor of Samuel Fineman, who passed away in 2021. His generous donation to Mount Sinai was made in gratitude for the exceptional cardiac care he received from Samin K. Sharma, MD, the Director of the Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital Cardiovascular Clinical Institute. Mr. Fineman’s contributions will be permanently acknowledged with a plaque outside the Catheterization Lab, ensuring that his legacy lives on.

Dr. Sharma expressed pride in the commitment of the team to embrace AI technologies, stating, “While we are proud to be recognized as a global leader in the quality and safety of the care we provide to our patients, I am confident that we will continue to leverage and apply the latest revolutions in AI technologies to drive our standards to even higher levels.”

Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital holds a prestigious position in cardiology, ranking No. 2 in the United States for cardiology, heart, and vascular surgery according to U.S. News & World Report. It is also recognized as the leading facility in New York and ranked No. 6 globally by Newsweek in its list of “The World’s Best Specialized Hospitals.”

As part of the broader Mount Sinai Health System, which encompasses seven hospitals and a vast network of practices throughout the greater New York region, the Fuster Heart Hospital continues to advance medicine through education and translational research. The health system aims to provide the safest, highest-quality, and most equitable care available.
