Three new cases of measles have been confirmed in Minnesota, specifically in Dakota County, according to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). All affected individuals are unvaccinated children who have not traveled outside the state in recent weeks. This brings the total number of measles cases in Minnesota for the year to eight.

Local health officials are collaborating with health departments to identify and contact individuals who may have been exposed to the virus. The recent cases follow an earlier incident this summer where an unvaccinated child from Dakota County exposed hundreds to measles during a visit to the Nickelodeon Universe at the Mall of America.

Measles Cases in Nearby Wisconsin

As of Friday, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services has reported 36 measles cases this year. The most recent cases in Wisconsin are linked to an out-of-state visitor who exposed customers at rest stops in Roberts and Beloit.

Nationally, the United States has seen over 1,500 measles cases reported in 2023, with Texas alone accounting for more than 760 of these cases. Measles is known for being highly contagious and can lead to severe complications, including infections in the lungs and brain. Such complications can result in cognitive issues, deafness, or even death.

Vaccination Recommendations

The MDH emphasizes that the best prevention against measles is immunization. Officials recommend that children receive two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, with the first dose administered between the ages of 12 to 15 months and the second dose between 4 to 6 years old.

For parents seeking vaccination records for their children, Minnesota provides resources to access immunization information.

As the situation develops, health officials remain vigilant in monitoring and responding to cases of measles, underscoring the importance of vaccinations in preventing outbreaks.
