Lourdes Girls Soccer Team Champions Mental Health Awareness
The Rochester Lourdes girls soccer team is not only excelling on the field but is also leading an important initiative to promote mental health awareness. With an impressive record of eight wins, no losses, and two ties, the Eagles are currently ranked third in the state for Class 1A. Their defensive strength, anchored by sweeper Lauren Hust and goalie Claudia Pelowski, has resulted in only two goals allowed this season, with both ties ending in 0-0 draws.
On March 4, 2024, at 19:00, Lourdes will host Dover-Eyota in a non-conference match at Rochester Regional Stadium, dedicating the event to mental health awareness. This initiative is spearheaded by longtime coach Sarah Groven, who also serves as the Director of Counseling at Lourdes. The team has prepared mental health bracelets and fidget bags for all varsity players to promote awareness during the game.
The event aims to encourage players and fans alike to reflect on mental health. During halftime, athletes will reach out to individuals they haven’t communicated with recently, reinforcing the importance of checking in on friends and loved ones. Following this, players will illuminate the field with their cell phone flashlights, symbolizing unity in this vital cause. Spectators are also invited to wear green, the color associated with mental health awareness.
This marks the second consecutive season that Lourdes has organized a mental health awareness night. The idea emerged after Groven won green soccer balls at a coaches’ clinic, inspiring her to use the game as a platform for this crucial topic.
“I think our kids are working through a lot of things and this is an opportunity to share that understanding in a safe place,” Groven stated. “It starts with caring about each other and checking in with each other. This allows them to create stronger connections. There is nothing wrong with checking in with someone. You never know how that might impact another person’s life.”
Senior captain Lauren Hust highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting that it fosters an environment where students can share their experiences. “Mental health awareness brings everyone together and lets us know how important it is. It feels good to be a part of something like this,” she said, adding her hope that the initiative will continue to grow and make a lasting impact.
Another senior captain, Stella Beatty, emphasized that dedicating a night to mental health helps normalize the challenges many face. “Mental health struggles are becoming a lot more accepted, more normalized,” she explained. “In our soccer program, it feels like a community experience. We understand that it is okay to seek help. It is great how our coach doesn’t just focus on the physical aspect of soccer, but also supports us mentally, building our confidence in every way she can.”
The Lourdes girls soccer team exemplifies how sports can transcend competition, fostering a supportive community that prioritizes mental health. As they continue their successful season, their commitment to this critical cause sets a powerful example for athletes everywhere.
