Joe Biden Begins Radiation Therapy for Aggressive Prostate Cancer
Former President Joe Biden is now undergoing radiation and hormone therapy for an aggressive form of prostate cancer, his office confirmed on October 11, 2025. The 82-year-old former president was diagnosed with the disease after leaving office in January 2025, a period that has raised questions about his health and capacity to serve.
Biden’s aide, Kelly Scully, disclosed that the treatment is part of a comprehensive medical plan. The cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9, signifies a particularly aggressive form of the disease. The Gleason score is a classification system that assesses the aggressiveness of prostate cancer based on the appearance of cancer cells under a microscope, with scores ranging from 6 to 10. Scores of 8, 9, and 10 indicate high aggressiveness.
The former president’s cancer diagnosis came after he reported experiencing urinary symptoms, which prompted further medical evaluations. Unfortunately, it was determined that the cancer had spread to his bones, complicating his condition. This development follows a previous diagnosis of skin cancer during his presidency.
Health Challenges and Political Landscape
Biden’s health has become a focal point in the political arena, particularly following his presidency, which concluded in January 2025. His decision not to seek reelection came after a contentious debate with Donald Trump, raising concerns about his age and overall health. The debate and resulting public scrutiny highlighted the challenges faced by aging leaders in political office.
As Biden embarks on this treatment journey, the implications of his health extend beyond his personal well-being. The ongoing discussions about aging leaders are amplified by his status as the oldest president in U.S. history. With public interest in his condition, the effectiveness of early detection and treatment for serious health conditions is underscored.
The announcement of Biden’s treatment also emphasizes the broader context of health issues affecting political figures. The importance of transparency regarding health challenges cannot be overstated, particularly as the electorate considers the capabilities of their leaders.
Given the significant health risks associated with aging, Biden’s situation serves as a reminder of the necessity for regular medical evaluations. His ongoing treatment plan seeks not only to manage his cancer but also to maintain his quality of life during this challenging time.
As Biden continues his therapy, the nation watches closely, reflecting on the intersection of health, age, and leadership in contemporary politics.
