Hochul Extends COVID-19 Vaccine Access as Federal Rollout Stalls
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has renewed a disaster declaration that allows pharmacists to administer COVID-19 vaccines without prescriptions. This decision aims to maintain vaccine access as the federal government experiences delays in its vaccine rollout, particularly concerning updated COVID-19 shots for children. The executive order, which was renewed on March 10, 2024, comes amid rising confusion over federal changes affecting vaccine distribution.
The current situation arises from ongoing challenges with the federal Vaccines for Children program, which has not yet been authorized by the Trump administration for ordering updated vaccines. In light of these hurdles, Hochul is urging federal officials to expedite their actions while her administration seeks alternative solutions to ensure that uninsured children can receive vaccinations.
Governor Hochul emphasized her commitment to public health, stating, “I’ve been clear with New Yorkers that even as Washington continues its misguided campaign against science, I will always do what I can to ensure New Yorkers have access to the vaccines and information families need to make decisions about their health care — with no exceptions.” She further noted her readiness to sign extensions of the executive order as necessary, asserting that science will guide her administration’s decisions rather than political considerations.
Prior to the implementation of this executive order, New York pharmacists faced restrictions that limited their ability to administer COVID-19 vaccines due to the lack of federal guidance. The recent shutdown of federal operations suggests that further guidance may be delayed longer than anticipated. Other states are also taking measures to ensure continued access to COVID-19 vaccines. For instance, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro recently signed a similar executive order to protect vaccine access for residents.
Federal health officials, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who serves as the Secretary of Health and Human Services, have raised questions about the overall efficacy of vaccines since the onset of the Trump administration. As both state and federal authorities navigate these complex challenges, the focus remains on ensuring that communities have uninterrupted access to vital vaccines.
