Free HIV Testing and Community Resources Offered in Fresno
On Friday, Clinica Sierra Vista will provide free HIV testing and community resources in Fresno, California. The event will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Orange & Butler Community Health Center, located at 1350 S. Orange Ave. Alongside testing, attendees will have access to fresh produce, ice cream, and information from ten local organizations.
The HIV testing is quick and confidential, taking less than 20 minutes to complete. Ashton Chase, a family nurse practitioner at Clinica Sierra Vista, noted that many patients do not exhibit symptoms initially. “The majority of our patients that I see don’t have any symptoms,” Chase explained. “If they do, they present with flu-like symptoms, which people just pass off as the flu.” This trend often leads to late diagnoses when individuals eventually seek emergency care.
Rising HIV Diagnoses in Fresno County
Fresno County has seen a troubling increase in HIV diagnoses, reporting 178 new cases in 2023. This figure represents a staggering 52% increase since 2019. The local infection rate stands at 16.6 per 100,000 individuals, surpassing California’s statewide average of 12.2 per 100,000.
The rise in diagnoses highlights the importance of awareness and testing, especially as World AIDS Day approaches. This annual observance, held on December 1, aims to raise awareness about the ongoing impact of HIV/AIDS globally. Notably, the United States did not officially recognize World AIDS Day for the first time since its inception in 1988, prompting responses from health advocates.
Asia Russell, executive director of Health GAP, a global HIV advocacy organization, criticized this decision, stating, “A commemorative day, as minor as that might sound, is actually life-saving work to chip away at that deadly stigma.” The lack of recognition underscores the ongoing challenges in addressing HIV/AIDS effectively.
Community Engagement and Support Services
The Fresno event will include representatives from various community organizations, offering resources and information to residents. Participating groups include the American Red Cross, AT&T, West Care California, and Healthcare For the Homeless, among others.
These organizations aim to enhance community awareness and provide crucial support services, from health insurance assistance to behavioral health programs. Clinica Sierra Vista emphasizes the need for accessible health services, particularly in the face of rising infection rates.
As the community prepares for this important event, the focus remains on increasing awareness, reducing stigma, and providing essential health services to those in need. The combination of free testing, fresh produce, and community resources presents a unique opportunity for residents to engage with their health proactively.
