Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit is facing a potential lung transplant as her health has deteriorated significantly. On December 19, 2023, the royal palace released a statement indicating that her doctors are considering this option due to the worsening of her lung condition.

The Crown Princess, aged 52, has been living with pulmonary fibrosis since her diagnosis in 2018. This rare and chronic disease results in progressive damage and scarring of lung tissue, making it increasingly difficult for the lungs to transport oxygen into the bloodstream. Symptoms can include shortness of breath, a persistent dry cough, fatigue, and muscle or joint pain.

In the palace’s statement, officials noted, “During the autumn, a number of tests have been carried out that show a clear worsening of the Crown Princess’ health.” As a result, the physicians at Rikshospitalet University Hospital have initiated the evaluation process for a possible lung transplant.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit had previously expressed concerns over how her diagnosis would impact her royal duties. In 2018, she remarked, “Although such a diagnosis will limit my life at times, I’m glad that the disease has been discovered so early. My goal is still to work and participate in the official program as much as possible.”

The Crown Princess married Crown Prince Haakon, the son of King Harald V and heir to the Norwegian throne, in 2001. Together, they have two children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus. Mette-Marit also has a 28-year-old son, Marius Borg Høiby, from a previous relationship. Høiby is currently facing trial on multiple charges, including four counts of rape, set to take place early next year.

The health of Crown Princess Mette-Marit has drawn public attention, as she has been an active member of the Norwegian royal family and has contributed to various social causes throughout her life. As she prepares for this new phase of her medical journey, the royal family’s supporters remain hopeful for her recovery and continued service to the community.
