Clayton County Launches Whole Blood Transfusion Program for Trauma Care
Clayton County has taken a significant step in revolutionizing trauma care by launching a new whole blood transfusion program. This initiative, announced by the Clayton County Fire & Emergency Services (CCFES) in collaboration with Southern Regional Medical Center, enables paramedics to administer whole blood directly to patients experiencing severe hemorrhage at emergency scenes. This innovative approach aims to enhance patient survival rates during the critical golden hour of trauma care.
The new program departs from traditional methods that typically rely on individual blood components or intravenous fluids. Instead, whole blood offers a complete solution, containing essential elements such as red cells, white cells, platelets, and plasma. This comprehensive resource could prove vital in stabilizing trauma patients, as noted by officials who stressed that the availability of whole blood in the hands of first responders could make a crucial difference in life-threatening situations.
Fire Chief Tim Sweat emphasized the importance of this program, stating, “Providing whole blood in the field represents a new era of pre-hospital emergency care for our community,” as detailed in an official press release from Clayton County. This capability allows paramedics to restore both blood volume and the critical oxygen-carrying capacity that trauma victims desperately need.
Southern Regional Medical Center serves as the official blood bank provider for this initiative, supplying whole blood alongside a commitment to advancing healthcare beyond its hospital boundaries. Ela Lena, CEO of Southern Regional Medical Center, expressed enthusiasm for the program, declaring, “Our commitment to advancing healthcare in Clayton County extends beyond the walls of our hospital, and this program will have an immediate impact on saving lives in our community.”
Launch Event Scheduled for October 1
To celebrate this advancement in emergency medical services, CCFES has scheduled a launch event and press conference on October 1, 2023. The event will take place outside the main entrance to the Emergency Room at Southern Regional Medical Center, located at 91 Upper Riverdale Rd., Riverdale, GA 30274. The gathering will start at 10:00 a.m. and will feature both Chief Sweat and CEO Lena sharing insights and addressing questions about the new program.
Members of the media interested in covering the event can contact Clayton County Fire & Emergency Services at (770) 473-7833 or via email at [email protected]. For inquiries related to Southern Regional Medical Center, interested parties can reach out at (770) 991-8000 or through email at [email protected].
As this ground-breaking program launches, the community will be watching closely to see how it transforms emergency medical care in Clayton County and potentially sets a precedent for other regions.
