Camp Abilities Empowers Blind Athletes at Kean University
‘Camp Abilities’ has become a transformative experience for young athletes who are blind or visually impaired, showcasing their talents and building confidence. Hosted annually at Kean University, this year’s camp concluded successfully, wrapping up a vibrant season of sports and camaraderie.
The camp’s director, Alexandra Stribing, has dedicated nearly two decades to running various ‘Camp Abilities’ programs across the United States. She launched the New Jersey initiative three years ago in collaboration with Kean University, where she serves as an assistant professor. Under her guidance, the camp has grown to be a vital resource, offering children the chance to engage in sports while fostering a supportive community.
Inclusive Sports Programming
Every summer, students from Kean University volunteer as coaches, helping participants learn and excel in different sports. This year, the camp took place at the RWJBH Field of Dreams in Toms River, New Jersey. Coaches and athletes alike embraced the spirit of teamwork and inclusivity, utilizing innovative adaptations to ensure everyone could compete fairly.
One notable adaptation involves the use of eye masks in sports like soccer, allowing visually impaired athletes to engage in the game on equal footing with their sighted peers. This approach not only enhances competitiveness but also cultivates an environment where all athletes can thrive and learn.
A Bright Future Ahead
‘Camp Abilities’ has made a significant impact in its three years in New Jersey, providing opportunities and experiences that may otherwise be inaccessible to blind and visually impaired youth. As the camp continues to evolve, interest from the community remains strong, with many eager to learn how they can contribute in the future.
Those interested in supporting or participating in next year’s camp can find more information on the Camp Abilities website. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by both participants and coaches underscore the importance of such initiatives, making a lasting difference in the lives of young athletes.
