ByHeart Infant Formula Recall Linked to Whole Milk Ingredient
A multistate outbreak of botulism has been associated with infant formula products manufactured by New York-based ByHeart. The outbreak may have originated from whole milk powder used in the formula, as indicated by a statement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on January 23, 2024.
On November 11, 2023, ByHeart announced a voluntary recall of all batches of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula and Anywhere Pack. This decision followed the detection of Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that poses serious health risks and can lead to life-threatening illness or death in infants.
FDA Testing Reveals Contaminated Samples
As part of the investigation, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted testing on the formula and identified two samples that tested positive for botulinum. One sample was a closed product of ByHeart powdered infant formula, which matched a clinical isolate from an infant affected by the outbreak. The second sample was whole milk powder sourced from a supplier of ByHeart, raising concerns about the origin of the contamination.
The CDC statement emphasized the importance of monitoring and investigating food safety, particularly in products intended for vulnerable populations such as infants. The agency is coordinating with state and local health departments to track the outbreak and ensure that affected products are removed from the market.
Health Risks and Guidance for Parents
Parents and caregivers are urged to remain vigilant and check their supplies of infant formula. Symptoms of botulism in infants can include weakness, difficulty feeding, decreased muscle tone, and constipation. If any of these symptoms appear, immediate medical attention is recommended.
The recall of ByHeart products has prompted broader discussions about food safety standards in the infant formula industry. As the investigation continues, both the CDC and FDA are working to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
ByHeart has expressed its commitment to consumer safety and is cooperating fully with health authorities. The company encourages customers to return any recalled products to the place of purchase for a full refund.
As detailed investigations unfold, the health and safety of infants remain a top priority for both manufacturers and regulatory bodies. The potential link between the whole milk ingredient and the outbreak serves as a reminder of the critical nature of food safety in infant nutrition.
