Bill Gates Warns of Child Death Surge Due to Aid Cuts
Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft Corp, has expressed grave concerns about the impact of foreign aid cuts made during the Donald Trump administration. In a recent annual letter, Gates highlighted that these reductions have reversed decades of progress in global health and contributed to a troubling rise in child mortality rates.
For the first time in 25 years, child deaths increased from 4.6 million in 2024 to 4.8 million in 2025. Gates attributed this increase to declining funding from wealthy nations, noting that global health advancements stalled in the past year. He stated, “The thing I am most upset about is the fact that the world went backwards last year,” emphasizing the stark reality faced by the world’s poorest children.
Gates criticized the aggressive cost-cutting measures, many of which are linked to Elon Musk‘s Department of Government Efficiency. Musk had publicly challenged Gates to substantiate his claims, which Gates now argues are evident in the data.
Future Projections Highlight More Risks
According to the Gates Foundation’s latest Goalkeepers Report, up to 12 million more children could die by 2045 if global health funding is reduced by 20% from 2024 levels. This forecast is based on modeling conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. Gates pointed out that, even at their highest, foreign aid budgets constituted less than 1% of GDP in most donor countries, underscoring the need for increased funding.
He called for a restoration of financial support, stating, “It is critical that we restore some of the funding.”
Despite these concerns, Gates remains cautiously optimistic about the potential for innovation to drive progress, particularly through advancements in artificial intelligence. He wrote, “I believe the world will keep improving — but it is harder to see that today than it has been in a long time.” However, he warned that the upcoming five years may present significant challenges as governments and nonprofits strive to deliver lifesaving solutions amidst tighter budgets.
Gates’ Philanthropic Commitment
In 2025, Gates pledged to donate the majority of his wealth—approximately $100 billion—to the Gates Foundation, part of a broader initiative to allocate $200 billion over the next 20 years. He urged other billionaires to increase their philanthropic efforts, arguing that as government aid diminishes, private contributions must rise to fill the gap.
Currently, Gates has a net worth of $118 billion, positioning him as the 16th richest individual on the Bloomberg Billionaire Index. He stepped down from Microsoft’s board in March 2020.
As the global community grapples with these pressing issues, Gates’ insights serve as a stark reminder of the critical role that sustained funding plays in safeguarding the health of vulnerable populations around the world.
