Beloved Educator and Artist James Schermerhorn Passes Away at 96
James Thomas Schermerhorn, affectionately known as Jim, passed away on December 1, 2025, at the age of 96 after a period of declining health. Born on May 13, 1929, in St. Paul, Minnesota, he was the son of the late James and Edith Thomas Schermerhorn. Jim’s legacy extends beyond his family; he was a dedicated educator and passionate artist who touched the lives of many throughout his career.
Jim served as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, working at the Military Air Transport Headquarters. His commitment to education began early, as he pursued an Associate of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota, followed by a Bachelor of Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the University of Iowa.
Career in Education and Art
From 1963 to 1992, Jim taught art at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, where he also held the position of Chair of the Art Department. His influence extended to Seminole Community College in Sanford, Florida, where he served as an adjunct instructor. Jim was particularly passionate about painting, working with acrylics and oils, and he was known for his vibrant artistic expression.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Jim was an avid daylily grower and hybridizer. He cherished his time spent woodworking with his brother and enjoyed traveling to various destinations including Turkey, Europe, Hawaii, the American Southwest, Alaska, and parts of South and Central America. His family recalls fond memories of playing cards and spending quality time together, which highlighted Jim’s love for family.
Community Engagement and Family Legacy
After relocating to North Carolina, Jim became an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, where he served as an usher and was involved in the grounds committee. His contributions to the church community reflected his commitment to service and fellowship.
Jim leaves behind a loving family who will miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife, Leora Schermerhorn, whom he married in 1966, and their two sons, Charlie (Carol) and Andy (Tatiana). His grandchildren, April (Jeff), Adam (Cassidy), Bella, and James, along with his great-grandchildren, Bryson and Hunter, and his siblings, Bonnie Pillivant (Don), Carol Williams, and Dr. Richard (Renee) Schermerhorn, also remember him fondly.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on January 24, 2026, in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church in Winter Park, where he and Leora exchanged vows. A reception will follow at 1044 Terrace Blvd., Orlando. Jim’s burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
In honor of Jim’s memory, his family encourages those who wish to pay tribute to consider planting a living memorial in his name.
