Apple Unveils AirPods Pro 3 with Heart Rate Monitor, But No Smart Ring Yet
Apple announced the new AirPods Pro 3, which feature a built-in heart rate monitor, but the anticipated Apple Ring remains absent from the lineup. During yesterday’s event, Apple showcased the AirPods Pro 3’s ability to track workouts without needing an Apple Watch, raising questions about the future of a smart ring that many have awaited since patent filings in 2020.
The introduction of the heart rate monitor in the AirPods Pro 3 represents a significant advancement in wearable technology. Users can now monitor their heart rates while engaged in various activities, making the device more versatile for fitness enthusiasts. This innovation might suggest that Apple is inching closer to developing a smart ring, particularly as competitors like Oura have established a strong presence in the market.
Despite the innovations, industry insider Mark Gurman stated last October that “Apple isn’t actively developing a ring and has no plans to launch one.” He noted that such a product could undermine the success of the Apple Watch, which has consistently been a leader in the fitness-tracking space. With the Apple Watch 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch SE 3 all featuring extensive fitness capabilities, there seems to be little motivation for Apple to introduce a ring that could compete with its flagship wearable.
The Oura Ring 4, a popular choice for tracking sleep, menstrual cycles, and overall health, starts at $349 and requires a monthly subscription. In comparison, the Apple Watch 11 is priced at $399, while the Apple Watch SE 3 is available for $249. Both Apple watches offer screens that enhance user experience during fitness tracking, providing a greater range of functionality than a ring might offer.
While many users, including those who currently wear the Oura Ring, express a desire for an Apple Ring, the company remains focused on enhancing its existing product lines. The heart rate tracking capabilities integrated into the AirPods Pro 3 highlight Apple’s ongoing commitment to health and fitness technology.
As for the future of wearable tech within Apple, the absence of the anticipated ring leaves many questions unanswered. For now, the Oura Ring maintains its position as a favorite among users who prioritize features such as sleep and menstrual cycle tracking.
Apple continues to innovate, but the prospect of a smart ring remains uncertain. With the latest developments in the AirPods Pro 3, Apple is clearly making strides, but whether a smart ring will ever join its array of products remains to be seen. In the meantime, fitness enthusiasts will have to rely on existing devices to meet their health monitoring needs.
