Wilson Area School Board Weighs Land Acquisition Near School
The Wilson Area School Board is currently evaluating the potential purchase of land adjacent to the intermediate school in Wilson Borough. This discussion was included in the agenda for the school board meeting held on December 15, 2023, under the title “Balata Street property discussion.” Superintendent Harrison Bailey III indicated that the district is in search of additional maintenance and storage space, and the land’s close proximity to the intermediate school makes it an attractive option.
“No decisions have been made at this time,” Bailey stated. He emphasized that if acquired, the parcel would likely serve multiple purposes, primarily as maintenance facilities. Although the exact address of the land was not disclosed, a one-acre parcel located at 1350 Balata St. is currently listed for sale at $1.2 million. This site is immediately adjacent to the baseball field of the intermediate school and includes a substantial 12,000-square-foot warehouse.
The intermediate school itself is situated at 2400 Firmstone St. and is part of a broader development plan for the district. The Wilson Area School District is undergoing a significant $40 million renovation of its high school stadium. This project includes plans for a new gymnasium, additional classrooms, and technology labs. On December 16, 2023, the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission reviewed the renovation plans.
Details from the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission agenda reveal that the current Wilson Area High School stadium and its auxiliary building are set to be demolished. Additionally, an existing parking lot located in the northeast corner of the site, which currently supports the stormwater infrastructure, will also be removed. The new auxiliary building will retain the existing catwalk that connects Wilson Area High School to the new facility, which will be constructed on top of the old parking lot.
Further plans involve expanding the parking area in the southeast corner and creating additional unimproved parking in the athletic field to accommodate overflow during events. This multifaceted development underscores the district’s commitment to enhancing its facilities while considering the logistical needs of its growing student population.
As discussions continue regarding the potential land acquisition, the board’s decisions will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the district’s infrastructure and its ability to meet the needs of students and staff alike.
