Westmont’s “Little Women” Production Explores Timeless Themes

Westmont College is set to present a vibrant adaptation of “Little Women”, directed by visiting professor of theater arts Madeline Fanton. The production, based on Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel and adapted by Kate Hamill, will run at the college’s Porter Theatre with performances scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on February 27-28 and March 6-7, along with matinee shows at 2 p.m. on February 28 and March 7-8.

Fanton recalls her childhood connection to the story, stating, “I fell in love with Jo’s fiery spirit, Meg’s steady heart, Amy’s ambition, and Beth’s kindness.” Having joined Westmont in 2024, she draws on her personal experiences with the characters, stating that the themes of the story resonate deeply, even today.

Universal Themes Resonate Across Generations

The narrative, set in the 1860s, explores the challenges of growing up, navigating love and loss, and discovering one’s identity. “These are universal human experiences,” Fanton explained. While Hamill’s adaptation introduces some variations from the original text and previous film portrayals, it preserves the core themes that have captivated audiences for over a century.

“Rehearsals have been full of laughs and high energy; everyone is finding their way into their characters,” Fanton noted. She expressed hope that the cast would gain a fresh perspective on their roles and the creative process. “I hope audiences connect the unique gifts of each character to the people in their lives and are prompted to reflect on the unique gifts and abilities of every person they encounter,” she added.

Fanton, a graduate of UC Irvine and holding a master’s degree from Cal State Northridge along with a doctorate from UC Santa Barbara, previously directed “Poor Clare” at Westmont in 2023. Her dedication to the craft is evident, as she encourages the actors to forge connections with their characters and the audience.
