WENO Drives Community Initiatives in Salisbury’s West End
The West End Neighborhood Organization (WENO) has made significant strides in 2025, focusing on empowering the Salisbury community through education, cultural celebration, and strategic partnerships. As the first organization created specifically to benefit the West End, WENO aims to preserve and advance the area’s rich history and identity.
Key Initiatives and Community Engagement
WENO’s year began with a Housing Education Event in July, aimed at equipping residents with essential knowledge on fair housing laws, budgeting, leases, home maintenance, and local support programs. This initiative was designed to help families make informed housing decisions, reflecting WENO’s commitment to community education and empowerment.
In September, the organization collaborated with Livingstone College and Novant Health to host the ITAV Career Readiness & Medical Exposure Event. This event provided students with hands-on opportunities to explore healthcare careers through workshops, mentoring, and skill-building activities. The same month, WENO held a Senior Safety Meeting at Gethsemane Baptist Church, partnering with the Salisbury Police Department to help older adults learn about safety measures and scam prevention.
October saw WENO organizing a Community Meeting to update residents on ongoing projects, fostering transparency and community involvement. Following this, the organization celebrated the West End Trunk or Treat in collaboration with Salisbury Parks & Recreation, an event that brought families together for music, costumes, games, and giveaways, enhancing neighborhood spirit.
Focus on Health and Cultural Heritage
In November, WENO worked with Rowan County Public Health and the city of Salisbury to hold a Community Focus Group Discussion. This gathering allowed residents to share their perspectives on local health and wellness needs, reinforcing WENO’s dedication to community engagement. The organization plans to conclude the year with its annual Kwanzaa Celebration on December 26, 2025, a tradition that honors African American culture through music, food, art, and cultural education.
WENO’s ongoing priorities include strengthening resident engagement, promoting health and youth development, preserving cultural heritage, building collaborative partnerships, and creating safe community activities. “Through these efforts, WENO works to ensure that residents have access to resources, information, and opportunities that support their overall well-being,” stated a recent release from the organization.
The organization remains committed to addressing immediate community needs while fostering long-term stability and pride in the West End. By elevating resident voices, honoring cultural traditions, and collaborating with local partners, WENO continues to strengthen the fabric of the West End, safeguarding its history and investing in a thriving future for generations to come.
